October is a month that many countries around the world dedicate to breast cancer awareness on a mission to draw greater attention to the disease, to increase support for early detection, treatment and palliative care of the disease.
There are nearly 1.38 million new cases each year and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer (IARC Globocan, 2008). Breast cancer is by far the leading women cancer in both developed and developing countries.
• The Story of the Pink Ribbon
The American, Penne Laingen, was the first woman to use ribbon as a symbol in 1979: she was hanging yellow ribbons on trees to demand the release of her husband, held hostage in Iran. In the early 90s, the red ribbon, the colour of passion and blood, symbolizes the fight against the AIDS virus. In 1992, Alexandra Penney, editor-in-chief of Self magazine, imagined a pink ribbon for the fight against breast cancer and asked Estée Lauder to distribute it in her New York stores. Evelyn Lauder, vice president of the cosmetics company, outbid by promising to put ribbons on all the counters Estée Lauder, as well as the cosmetics stores of the country.
• But why the colour Pink?
The Pink Ribbon chosen by the company Estee Lauder Pink 150, "one of the best-selling colours" from Offray, leading ribbons company in the world. "A feminine colour, soft, cheerful and evokes good health, whatever this cancer is not," says the Breast Cancer Action group that fights against the disease. Today, the pink ribbon is the international symbol of the fight against breast cancer. To wear a pink ribbon marks its commitment to the fight against breast cancer and solidarity with those affected.
In 2019, the edition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place from Tuesday 1st October to Thursday 31st October. For a month, many events are organized, and all the funds raised during this period are entirely donated to associations that help and support people with cancer as well as research.
